RJ Says: Bercy Supercross

I have raced at the Bercy Supercross. In 1984, we actually raced it twice. The first race was right after the Daytona Supercross in March, and then we raced again at Bercy in December.

The very first year was cool. But the track was an unknown. When we (the top American Supercross racers) got there, we realized they (the organizers) didn't know fully how to put on a supercross. The track was so narrow, it was hard to pass, it was a 'European' supercross.

But also that first year, I realized how awesome a 'show' can be. Their show was awesome in Bercy! All of us were surprised at how great it was!

My very first thought though, the first time I got to Bercy: "Wow, this is a small track!" But I raced there again in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989. I've also gone another time after I retired from professional supercross and motocross racing.

RJ SAYS: Hidden Supercross Treasures

This 2010 Supercross season has gone exactly as no one expected. Everyone figured it was going to be a battle between the same two supercross 'titans' as last season - James Stewart and Chad Reed. Last year after 17 races they were the top two, with James the champion by four points over Chad.

To everyone's surprise, even their own, both are currently not racing - injured. They are watching what is essentially a 450 Supercross 'rookie' have a phenomenal year so far (Ryan Dungey).

A hidden treasure is not Ryan Dungey doing so well. I felt, as many others did, that he would have a great year. Based on the following: he's done well & won on a 450 before this season, all the confidence he had coming into this season from winning two championships in 2009 (the 250 West Lites Supercross, and the 250 AMA Outdoor Motocross) and his tremendous riding on a 450 for Team USA at the recent Motocross des Nations in Italy in October.

Hybrid Supercross / Motocross track co-designed by Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael completed for Monster Energy Cup

It's coming October 15th - the first annual Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas, at Sam Boyd Stadium. It's going to be the first of it's kind event - a hybrid Supercross / MX. The track is designed by the two biggest names in American Supercross and Motocross - Jeremy McGrath - an eight time AMA National Champion (7 Supercross titles, 1 AMA 250 National Championship) and Ricky Carmichael - a 15 time AMA National Champion (10 AMA MX Championships, 5 AMA Supercross titles).

Steven & Tommy slay the Sevlievo track as the party officially starts

The MX World Championship show has well and truly got off to an epic start. This weekend gone, Sevlievo laid on some awesome entertainment with intense racing and an all round feast of girls and music. A massive shout-out has to go to Steven Frossard and Tommy Searle for some great riding throughout the weekend. The [...]

Traversing Flat Corners

One of the great things about a worn down track is the help from ruts and berms.  Sure they can make things difficult, but they essentially help us keep our speed up in the corners.  Just like in NASCAR, the angled surface allows the bike to lean over and still find plenty of traction.  However, [...]

RJ Says: Supercross 2011

Rick Johnson is a seven time AMA Motocross and Supercross Champion. These are his thoughts on the upcoming 2011 AMA / FIM Supercross Series.

Depending on how healthy riders stay during the season, Supercross 2011 could be an incredibly awesome year.

Of course, we all say that every year, but this year could be something special - if most stay healthy.

As I go down a list of riders, my top pick is defending AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey.

Do I think Ryan will dominate Supercross the way he did outdoor MX in 2010? No, but after watching Ryan over the past few years, and especially at the MX of Nations in Italy in 2009, I've seen his confidence go up and up. Each time out, he gets a little faster, a little stronger, and smarter.
